When searching for apartments to rent online, be sure to be careful of potential scams - we've seen an increase in those specifically targeted at Boston renters.  Often on Facebook Marketplace or some other social media website, someone pretending to be the landlord, or an agent or a property manager will post pictures of an amazing-looking home at a great price in a desirable neighborhood - they'll ask for money up front and promise to give you the keys so you can move in right away, and then disappear completely.

Another common pitfall is the bail-and-switch: a certain apartment will be advertised that isn't actually available or possibly not even real, with the intent of steering a potential tenant towards something else.  These scams make the…

Today’s homeowners are sitting on significant equity, even as home price appreciation has eased recently. If you’re a homeowner, your net worth got a boost over the past few years thanks to rising home prices. Here’s what it means for you, even as the market moderates.

How Equity Has Grown in Recent Years

And while price appreciation has slowed this year, that doesn’t mean you’ve lost all the equity in your home. In fact, the latest Homeowner Equity Insights report from CoreLogic finds the average homeowner’s equity has grown by $34,300 over the past year alone.

And if…

A lot of the time, these reports are assuming things that aren’t realistic for the average household. For example, the methodology behind one of those reports says that renting is the smarter financial option because of the opportunity to invest money elsewhere. It assumes renters take the money they’d spend on costs tied to buying a home and put it in an investment portfolio.

But here’s the thing – most people who rent aren’t making those investments. Ken Johnson, Co-Author of the BH&J National Price-to-Rent Index, explains:

Brookline To Debate New Zoning Regulations

A new law has been proposed requiring an MBTA community to have at least one zoning district of reasonable size in which multi-family housing is permitted and requiring a minimum gross density of 15 units per acre, located no further than 0.5 miles from an MBTA stop, and no restrictions based on age, having to be suitable for families with children.  Its introduction has shaken the communities along the MBTA lines, especially Brookline, where many believe there has already been too much development.

As the Brookline community debates the new zoning proposal, every community that the MBTA runs through will be closely following these developments - especially those who would be affected by the next wave…
