Lexington — long known for its exceptional schools, historic charm, and strong community involvement — is embarking on one of the most significant public infrastructure projects in its history: the construction of a brand-new Lexington High School campus. Approved overwhelmingly by voters in December 2025, this transformational project will reshape the educational landscape of our town and reinforce Lexington’s reputation as a premier place to live and raise a family.

Why a New High School?

The current Lexington High School, originally built in 1953 with subsequent additions over the decades, has struggled with aging infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, and spaces that no longer meet the educational or safety needs of students. Many classrooms fall below state standards for size and quality — and the outdated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems have become increasingly costly and inefficient to maintain.

Recognizing that patchwork repairs were no longer sufficient, the School Building Committee worked with town staff, design professionals, and the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) to develop a plan for a modern facility that matches both Lexington’s educational goals and community expectations.

Project Scope & Timeline

The new high school represents a comprehensive rebuild on the existing campus site, designed to replace outdated facilities with a contemporary learning environment suited to 21st-century education. The project includes:

  • A new school building with flexible, collaborative learning spaces
  • A renovated and expanded field house
  • Updated athletic and recreation areas
  • Central administrative offices brought onto the campus footprint
  • Modern infrastructure focused on sustainability and energy efficiency

The total estimated cost is approximately $659–$660 million, making it one of the most ambitious school construction efforts in Massachusetts in recent years.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with students moving into the new building for the 2029–2030 school year. After the new facility opens, the old high school will be demolished and remaining site work — including athletic fields and landscaping — will be completed by 2031.

How It’s Being Funded

To make this vision a reality, the town pursued a Proposition 2 ½ debt-exclusion vote, which Lexington residents approved in December 2025. This allows the town to issue municipal bonds to finance the project, with the majority repaid over time through property taxes.

Support from the Massachusetts School Building Authority — including a grant of about $118.8 million — plus additional incentives through energy-efficient design programs, helps offset a portion of the cost and validates the project’s alignment with state priorities.

Community Impact & What This Means for Lexington

Beyond creating a state-of-the-art educational environment, the new Lexington High School will have broad implications for the community:

  • Enhanced property appeal: Great schools are a cornerstone of strong local real estate markets, and a modern high school ensures Lexington remains highly desirable to buyers.
  • 21st-century learning: The design focuses on flexible spaces that support collaboration, creativity, and wellness — features families increasingly look for in school environments.
  • Sustainability: With energy-efficient systems and design elements that promote natural light and indoor air quality, the building aligns with Lexington’s broader environmental goals.
  • Community pride: This project reflects Lexington’s longstanding commitment to education and reinforces the town’s identity as a community that values learning and future-focused planning.

 A Community Looking Ahead

The new Lexington High School isn’t just a construction project — it’s a long-term investment in the town’s future, one that will benefit students, families, and residents for decades to come. Whether you’re a current homeowner, planning a move to the area, or simply watching Lexington grow, this milestone underscores the town’s commitment to excellence.
